Vice president Kamala Harris scorned European explorers who discovered the Americans in a speech Tuesday at the National Congress of American Indians 78th Annual Convention.
“Since 1934, every October, the United States has recognized the voyage of European explorers who first landed on the American coast,” Harris said. “But that’s not the whole story. The whole story isn’t like that yet.
“Those explorers initiated a wave of destruction for the Tribal nations – violence, land theft, and the spread of disease were taking place,” he continued. “We must not shy away from the embarrassing past, and we must clarify it and do everything we can to address the impact of the past on indigenous communities today.”
Harris also claims to be the President BidenThe Build Back Better agenda will have “a significant impact on the Nation of India.”
After citing the statistics of missing American women and girls and claims of Native American voting rights being suppressed, Harris said, “Native Americans are more likely to live in poverty, be unemployed, and often struggling to get quality health care and to find affordable housing. ”
“This persistent inequality, this recurring injustice is not right. And the pandemic has only exacerbated it,” he added.
Harris said Biden’s $ 3.5 trillion infrastructure bill would help many of the problems Native Americans face.
“This bill represents the largest infrastructure investment our country has made since before World War II and presents, so far, an important opportunity to strengthen the Nation of India,” he said.
On Monday, Biden became first president to mark the second Monday of October as Indigenous Day with a presidential proclamation.
“For generations, Federal policies have systematically sought to assimilate and replace Indigenous peoples and eradicate indigenous cultures,” Biden write. “Today, we recognize the resilience and strength of Indigenous peoples as well as the immeasurable positive impact they have made on every aspect of American society.”
