Tony Abbott’s speech in Taiwan will be ‘a simple joke’ for China, says former ambassador

Former ambassador to China Geoff Raby says Tony Abbott’s recent speech in Taiwan will be viewed “as a mere joke” in China.

Raby said the comments are unlikely to delay the thaw of the China-Australia relationship, which is still icy despite a recent relaxation of import bans, including thermal coal.

The former prime minister’s speech drew the ire of Chinese officials, who called Abbott a “pitiful” and a “failed politician.”

The speech “will have no credibility or weight, and fortunately it will not influence the bilateral relationship between Australia and China,” Raby told Sky News.
