Qatar is set to host the next World Cup, with this the first in the championship game to be held in an Arab country and the second of the World Cup to be held across Asia. This is the 22nd run of the Fifa World Cup, the quadrennial tournament began in 1930, and the first since 2018 with Russia winning France for the second time.
After losing the final Euro 2020 on penalties in Italy, Gareth Southgate’s England is looking to go one better.
Where does the 2022 World Cup take place?
The tournament takes place in the State of Qatar, the smallest country in size (11,600 km2) and population (2.7m) ever to host the World Cup. This is its first time in a predominantly Arab and Muslim country and the second time in Asia after being held 11 times in Europe, three times in North America, five times in South America and once in Africa.
What are the chances of England?
While England may have been short on their first major men’s final since 1966, Italy loses on penalties, their charge at the Euro 2020 final has shortened their possibilities when it comes to next year’s World Cup.
Brazil are still currently many bookies ’favorites, despite their defeat in Argentina’s Copa America, but England are among a chasing pack that includes holders France, Germany and Spain. Italy, the new champions in Europe, Argentina, Belgium, Portugal and the Netherlands are expected to challenge, allowing qualification.
England already have five wins from six in their qualifying group and will continue their adventure against Andorra on Saturday.
When will it start?
When Qatar won the election held in 2010 to host the World Cup, the bid committee originally claimed it would be held, like its predecessors, in the summer months in full air conditioned stadiums given the Arabian peninsular temperature in mid -June of 50C. However, it quickly changed and Fifa was quick to nod by a request from the hosts to hold it at the start of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, something that could affect their bid it became part of the original proposal.

What is the format?
The World Cup grew from 24 teams (1982-1994) to 32 teams in 1998 and it will be the final incarnation of eight groups of four teams with the top two from each going through a knockout Round of 16, quarter -finals, semi -finals, plate match and final.
