Thousands of people signed a petition demanding the Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona provide answers on whether the student loan debt can be forgiven by executive order.
The Change.org petition came amid some Democratic lawmakers pushing for President Joe Biden to release a memo outlining whether his executive authority is broad enough to forgive student debt.
On the campaign trail, Biden said he will begin the student debt forgiveness process, indicating that he has backed up up to $ 10,000 as forgiveness for some Americans.
But the petition pointed the finger at Cardona, who said the president had asked in March “to get clarification” on whether he had the authority to cancel the student loan with an executive order.
“We have been waiting all this time for Cardona to write that memo to President Biden,” it said, “we are approaching seven months now and Cardona has not yet responded.
“This is completely unacceptable,” the petition said, pointing out that Cardona should be “forcibly removed as Secretary of Education if he chooses not to do his job.”
“Miguel Cardona needs to do his job and respond to the President,” it said.
As of Saturday, the petition had 77,000 signatures, more than half of its target of 150,000.
This week, a group of Democratic lawmakers signed a letter from the progressive Representative Ilhan Omar | calling on Biden to release to the public a memo about the extent of his executive authority to forgive student debt.
Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, and 14 of his colleagues said the Department of Education has ample time to answer.
Lawmakers are “urging the public release on October 22, 2021 the memo requested by the President from the Department of Education to determine the extent of the administration’s authority to broadly cancel student debt through remedial action. administrative. “
They argued that Biden could have used the same legal authority requested to suspend payments and cancel the student loan in certain instances.
Others Democrats such as the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Biden said he has no authority to forgive student loans on his own. Some progressives even say there should be complete forgiveness on the student loan.
