Opinion: this carbon-free energy source could be the wave of the future, if only Americans weren’t scared by it

Coal is dirty, it releases carbon when it burns. So that’s not the answer. But we still depend on it for about 20% of our electricity, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Natural gas is cleaner and produces about 40% of our juice. But even this fuel is “a massive source of carbon emissions,” about half that of coal (provided no methane is released when the gas is extracted).
