It took nearly 170 firefighters to control the fire, but neighbors also rushed to the scene and helped evacuate people, CBS2’s John Dias reported.
The video shows fire shooting from the roof and smoke engulfing the sky above 418 East 143rd Street at Mott Haven section
FDNY officials said the fire was contained in a building, but not long after, when firefighters arrived around 10 p.m. Friday.
“The fire was pretty advanced in coming to 418 and we quickly found that it had spread to 416,” Chief Dean Koester said.
The alarming fire quickly engulfed four apartment buildings and sent pandemonium throughout the area.
No one was hurt, due in part to neighbor Jacqueline Moncesino.
“I came from grandma’s awakening and we saw smoke here … and I came out and I smelled it,” said Moncesino, who lives across the street.
Moncesino and his sister called 911 then rushed into action.
“My brother and I, we started banging on the doors and calling the fire department. We started getting everyone out, and eventually the fire came to the top floor,” Moncesino said. “It’s the right thing to do. Everyone needs to take care of each other.”
Fire officials remained at the scene Saturday morning to investigate how the fire started.
