Dried apples are a favorite snack in our house. The best part about drying apples yourself? The process is so simple, and you only need two ingredients: apples and lemon juice.

What are the best apples to dry?

Easy-to-find varieties like Gala, Fuji, Gravenstein, and Honeycrisp are excellent. Look for firm, tasty apples that you like to eat fresh. Even though the drying process concentrates the sweetness of the apples, tart apples will still produce tart dried apples.

How long does it take to dry the apples?

The time it will take to dry will vary depending on the number of trays you have at one time and the thickness of the apple slices. On average, it takes 4 to 8 hours for up to nine trays of apples.

How do you dry apples in the oven?

Follow the peeling and soaking instructions above and then place apple slices in baking drying racks. Place in the oven at the lowest possible temperature (usually 140-170 degrees F) and open the door with the handle of a wooden spoon. This allows the condensation to escape rather than just settling back onto the apples. Bake for 5-8 hours.

How do I know if the dried apples are ready?

The apples are ready when they no longer feel wet (4-8 hours). Some apples will finish earlier than others on the same tray. Remove the ones that are already cooked and reserve them.

Even finished apples can feel a bit sticky when hot. Let the apples cool for an hour and then fold a slice between two fingers. If the apples aren’t sticky / sticky and are curled up, you’re good to go. If the apples are folded in half like a piece of paper, they are too dry. Still edible and delicious, but probably a bit tougher.

Store them in an airtight container like a mason jar. If you see any condensation inside the container after about a day, the apples didn’t dry long enough. It would be best to keep them in the refrigerator or freezer at this time.

  • 10 Apples {choose firm apples like Fuji}
  • 1/4 Bowl bottled lemon juice
  • Fill a bowl with cold water and 1/4 cup of lemon juice.

  • Set up a workstation with a peeler, cutting board, sharp knife, and container for the shells and cores.

  • Clean the apples, peel them, remove the core and cut them into thin slices.

  • Place the slices in the water / juice mixture.
