In late August, Hawaii regulators established a law for all smokable hemp products and gummies and beverages that contain cannabinoids. With the new rules, CBD products can only be in tincture, softgel, capsule, powder, tablet, or topical form. The ban also targets vaporizer fluids made from hemp-derived cannabinoids. Some critics are raising red flags that this could be a success for Hawaiian hemp production.
The state ended a hemp pilot program and targeted a US Department of Agriculture program last year, meaning all licensees and program applicants will need to apply for USDA approval. There are an estimated 57 producers in the state.
“These rules are the next step toward regulating the growing hemp industry in Hawaii in a way that provides local hemp farmers with a legal avenue to bring consumable hemp products to market while protecting consumers by requiring laboratory testing. for contaminants and labeled cannabinoid content, “said a spokesman for the Food and Drug Branch of the Hawaii Department of Health in an Aug. 9 announcement.

All hemp growers in Hawaii must comply with the new growing and distribution parameters, a move that some think could negatively affect the industry on the islands. Hemp growers will need to obtain the correct USDA license and receive a registration certificate to grow. Producers then must adhere to all facility standards, quality control, and record keeping – a smart measure that consumers will benefit from.
