Steve Carless Joins Warner Records as President, A&R


Steve “Steve-O” Carless has been appointed to the newly created position of President, A&R at Warner Records.

Carless will join the company on December 1, reporting to the Co-Chairman and CEO Aaron Bay-Schuck.

He will work closely with the entire A&R team at Warner Records, as well as Julian Petty, EVP / Head of Business & Legal Affairs, and Chris. Atlas, Executive Vice President, Urban Music and Marketing.

Carless, one of the most influential and accomplished executives in the industry, recently founded his own SC Company, driving projects for artists like Beyoncé and Polo G.

Throughout his career, he has held senior A&R and creative positions at Def Jam Recordings, Atlantic Records, Registries of the Republicand served as president of Uptown Records, working with chart-leading artists Nipsey Hussle, Big Sean, WHICH, Jeezy, 2 Chainz, Dave East, Pusha T and many more.

Before Warner, Carless was executive vice president of A&R in Universal Music GroupRegistries of the Republic.

He has served multiple roles during his rise through the ranks of the music business. He began his music career in 2003 as an office assistant at Star Trak Entertainment, home of the Neptunes.

The following year, he joined Def Jam Recordings, working as Director, Lifestyle & Radio Promotions. In 2012, he moved to Atlantic Records, where he oversaw several platinum-certified projects for YG and Jeezy, while also serving as president of Atlanta-based Jeezy’s CTE World Recordings.

He returned to Def Jam in 2015 as Senior Director of A&R and Special Projects before being named Senior Vice President of A&R, Artist Relations and Development.

In addition to his posts on the label, Carless has worked independently on several award-winning projects. In 2014, he co-founded the Marathon Agency and began managing the career of the late artist and entrepreneur Nipsey Hussle. By partnering with Atlantic Records, they released Nipsey’s acclaimed debut album, Grammy-nominated Victory Lap, followed by two posthumous Grammy Awards in 2020.

In 2019, she worked with Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment to assist A&R on their number 1 album, The Lion King: The Gift, and the acclaimed visual album Black Is King.

Carless co-manages rising hip-hop superstar Polo G, who earned his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 last spring, with the Hall of Fame, as well as his first No. 1 on the Hot 100, Rap star.

He is also part of the Nipsey Hussle Estate management team. Carless has run several entrepreneurial ventures, including the lifestyle brand company, Best of Both Offices, which he co-founded in 2005.

A passionate activist, while at UMG / Republic, he was an organizer of the Republic Records Action Committee and a member of the UMG Significant Change Task Force.
