A car exploded on a busy road in inner suburban Parkville, sending black plumes of smoke into the air and leaving paramedics with at least one patient.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said paramedics were called to the scene on Flemington Road, near the Royal Women’s Hospital, around 10.10am on Friday.
Emergency services are still investigating the situation, and it is not known if there were people in the car when it exploded.
However, it is understood that paramedics treat at least one patient.
As of 11 a.m., police had not released any information about the incident.
The Department of Transport said Flemington Road in Parkville was closed in both directions between Harker Street and Grattan Street due to an emergency incident.
“Police are directing traffic. Drivers should use Royal Parade, Curzon Street or Swanston Street as alternatives, allowing extra time through the area,” it said in a statement.
“Signing engineers are adjusting traffic lights to help minimize delays.”
